The New Bern Firearms Academy HB 193 Armed School Staff Certification Course is designed for private school employees who may be authorized to carry a concealed handgun on educational property in accordance with North Carolina law. This comprehensive 9-hour program goes beyond basic firearms training by focusing on the unique responsibilities of carrying a firearm in a school environment. Students will receive instruction in firearms safety, marksmanship fundamentals, North Carolina use-of-force law, active assailant response, decision-making under stress, and school security considerations. Unlike traditional concealed carry courses, this program is specifically tailored to the educational setting and emphasizes the preservation of innocent life, sound judgment, situational awareness, and legal decision-making. Students will participate in classroom instruction, scenario-based discussions, and live-fire range training designed to reinforce safe and responsible firearm handling. Course Topics Include: • HB 193 Overview and Armed School Staff Responsibilities • Firearms Safety and Safe Handling Practices • Marksmanship Fundamentals • Carrying in an Educational Environment • North Carolina Use-of-Force Law • Defense of Self and Defense of Others • Active Assailant Recognition and Response • Interaction with Responding Law Enforcement • Decision-Making During Critical Incidents • School Security Best Practices • Live-Fire Range Training Required Equipment: Concealable handgun Concealable holster that covers the trigger guard (no leather holsters) Minimum of 2 magazines (3 preferred) Magazine carrier (recommended) 200 rounds of factory ammunition Eye protection Hearing protection Baseball cap or brimmed hat (recommended) Closed-toe shoes Appropriate range attire Students will leave this course with a deeper understanding of the legal, ethical, and practical responsibilities associated with carrying a firearm in a school environment. This course is ideal for private school administrators, teachers, coaches, and staff members who may be designated by their school to participate in an armed school staff program.
